Made by Ames, this sword had a bright gilt brass knight's head pommel with gilt wire bound Mother of Pearl grips with gilt brass back and under straps. Chain knuckleguard, deeply cast and chased floral crossguard. Blade is the 1832/34 style, straight, double edged, with central fuller. Etched with oak leaves, acorns and scrolling floral motifs along with arms, crossed flags and eagle with upraised wings and motto banner overhead. Ames firm etching partially visible in an oval under reverse languette. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Frosting is good and etching vivid, though there are some thin grey spots. Upper blade bright with some scattered grey spots and a few darker grey 2" from tip on obverse. Nice bright gilt remaining on pommel, just some rubbing on backstrap and decorated ferrule that also has one tiny dent. Scabbard with bright gold wash, floral engraving at ring mounts and above rectangular drag with raised base ring. Identified as a militia staff officer's sword for convenience by Peterson and followed by collectors, this pattern could have been carried by an officer of any rank with the means and good taste to own it.
