Civil War 1850 staff and field officer's sword by Emerson and Silver of New Jersey. Regulation pattern with some non-regulation touches. Pommel and guard with floral motifs, but central motif of the counterguard is an eagle with spread wings rising phoenix-like from flames or a sunburst with a US overhead. Cast silver grip with alternating beaded and plain ridges with coiled and braided wire in the channels. Blade in the bright with thin frosting. Obverse with tombstone blade maker stamp at bottom next to guard, etched Emerson and Silver address just above the ricasso. Latticework, floral scrolls and panoply of arms with lances and pennants. Reverse with lattice and dot work above ricasso. Floral scrolls and foliate geomtric designs. Intertwined foliate "U.S." Frosted panels on both sides terminate in Arabesque points. Black leather scabbard with brass mounts. Reverse of mounts plain. Obverse engraved with geometric and floral motifs. Upper mount with "U.S." in upper half, partial wreath at either side. CONDITION: Very good. Brass has aged patina overall with just traces of gilt, but good detail. Grip is undamaged. Blade is bright with just a couple of spots of grey shading and etching is vivid. Minor scuffs to leather scabbard body. Good color and finish overall. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
