Regulation pattern 1834 US officer's sword with brass mounted leather scabbard indicating intended use by all officers except General Staff and General Officers. Gilt brass globular pommel, silver wrapped grip, boat shell guard with extended quillons, etched double edged straight blade with central fuller. Black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. Obverse etched panels with floral motifs, crossed cannons, crossed flags, liberty cap on pole, with US in wreath overhead and eagle with branch, arrow and motto ribbon above with stars overhead. Reverse with "NP Ames / Cutler / Springfield" dry point etched on scroll, floral and urn motif, US in oval wreath, eagle with arrows, branches, motto ribbon and stars overhead. Scabbard black leather with gilt upper, middle and drag mounts, all with bands of incised lines. Scroll cast stud on upper mount. CONDITION: Excellent. Hilt shows much gilt. Just some rubbing to raised beads in recessed panels on knuckleguard. Silver subdued. Etching is vivid. Frosting thins above flame terminal points of major motifs to final termination with drapery and sunburst points 4" above upper eagle motif on either side. Blade is bright with some small grey spots from there to tip. Scabbard is very good. Black leather with good color and finish. Much gilt on mounts. Stud in place. Upper mounts lack carrying rings though small spot on top of each shows where they were. The leather scabbard with stud and rings defines the sword use as by officers other than general and staff, but these would mostly be carrying it in a frog and the rings would be superfluous. A very nice example of the regulation US army officer's sword in the early west and Mexican War period. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
