This attractive saber is was probably imported from England. The slightly curved, single fullered blade is decorated with panels of blued and etched designs on both sides, with some engraved designs with gilt wash. The right side shows a splayed patriotic eagle with an "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner, stand of arms with a liberty cap, and scrolls. The other side features etched panels with scrolls and an engraved stand of arms with liberty cap in the center, ricasso engraved with a "Warranted" banner. The gilt brass reverse 'P' hilt features chased and shaped languettes with shells and a pierced knucklebow with repeating bell flowers. The birds head pommel features a chased relief flower around the tang and foliate scrolls on the integral backstrap. Leather wrapped grip decorated with twisted copper wire. Complete with its original gilt brass scabbard engraved with bell flower and stiff leaf designs. CONDITION: Blade retains perhaps 30% fading blue finish and generous traces of gilt, otherwise grey patina showing much original polish. Hilt retains about 80-90% original gilt with wear to high edges and high relief designs. Grip very good with one minor crack on left side, near pommel. Scabbard retains about 40-50% original gilt, the remainder faded to mustard patina, some scattered denting. A very attractive early 19th century sword. DMG.
