Right side of ricasso marked "U.S. / NWP", left side marked "N.P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1845". Pommel cap with "NWP" and "WAT" inspector marks. Interior of guard has "BLHW" crudely scribed, presumably a previous owner. Single strand brass wire wrap. Scabbard with two hangers and distinct weld line. CONDITION: Blade is remarkably bright with a few scattered dark areas and one minor area of pitting on the spine. Scabbard with scattered brown patina more pronounced towards the drag and two small dents near the drag. This is an above average example of a pre-War 1840 Ames cavalry saber. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport. EW.
