Regulation 1850 pattern staff and field sword for majors and above and officers on staff duty. CONDITION: Hilt shows nice gilt on face of counterguard, other areas show brass with age patina and traces of gilt in recesses. Excellent sharkskin wrap and triple wire binding. Blade etching vivid on thin frosted panels with Arabesque finials. Obverse and reverse with similar motifs: crossed US flags with "Stand by the Union" along the staffs. Perched eagle with ribbon overhead. Liberty cap in sunburst. Reverse ricasso etched, "Schuyler, Hartley & Graham New York" on ricasso and an entwined foliate "US" above the crossed flags. Spine etched with overlapping leaf pattern. Metal is bright overall. Scabbard with smooth, deep color, blue-brown, simple brass mounts with scalloped edges. Medium patina with traces of gilt in recesses. Rings in place. Brass throat. A very nice example of regulation Civil War pattern. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
