This attractive circa 1820-1830 sword has three eagles depicted on it. The straight tapered single edged blade has a single fuller and long blued panels with engraved and gilt-washed decoration. The right side features a patriotic eagle with an "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in its beak, an Indian princess, and a Liberty cap with a stand of arms. The other side has a patriotic shield with Liberty cap and polearms as well as a quiver with arrows. The gilt-brass reverse 'P' hilt has relief chased and engraved languettes featuring foliate motifs. The knucklebow terminates in the eagles open beak and the chased feather extend the entire length of the backstrap. The bone grip has panels of gadrooning, rings, and other designs. Complete with its original gilt brass scabbard engraved on the front with foliate scrolls and a splayed American eagle holding an American shield. CONDITION: Blade retains about 70-80% original fire blue finish and most of the gilt wash. Some areas frosted or flaked and now have a heavier patina. Hilt retains 50-60% gilt finish. Grip shows some separation from backstrap due to warping and shrinkage and has a minor hairline cracks and a very small chip on underside of pommel. Scabbard shows some shallow denting and retains 80-90% original gilt finish, minor crack near throat and one throat screw absent. A very attractive American officers sword. DMG.
