USN Boarding pike with four-sided spike head and languettes. Termed as the Gilkerson's War of 1812 Type III. Simple spike was intended to be an effective defensive weapon for thrusting through boarding nets and even in crowded offensive actions were there was often not room to swing a cutting weapon. CONDITION: Good to very good. Wood shaft retains much original olive drab paint with some wear. Iron head with minor overall pitting as would be expected on a naval weapon, but no scaling or deep corrosion. Rivets in place. Slight bend to one languette 2" from the bottom. Some corrosion to wood and small chips and wood losses at the socket and languettes. Slight looseness to head. Some wear at butt. Shaft is good and straight. A good example of the standard pattern in use until after the Civil War. (SR)
