One of the more popular Civil War filtration canteens, this difficult to find Bartholomae patent specimen is in very complete condition with intact wool cover, leather strap, wide cork stopper, and compartment caps with chains in place. Clearly affixed to the distinctive "funnel" opening is a small brass plaque with raised letters "PATENTED/ JULY 9th 1861.". The government purchased only 1,000 of them, but they gained wide popularity with many soldiers who obtained them from a number of military suppliers. CONDITION: Overall, the canteen is very sound with some openings to the cover at the edges and broken leather strap.

Condition: Very Good
