Framed circa 1880s General David Morrison Escutcheon. David Morrison was one of the commanders of the 79th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Highlanders." General Morrison has an extensive history with the Highlanders, as he was commissioned a Captain in 1861. He would later be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1862 and then Colonel in 1863 after the previous Colonel of the Highlanders was wounded at Second Bull Run. Morrison would later be wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House while serving as a colonel of the Highlanders. Due to his "gallant and meritorious conduct" he was promoted to Brigadier General in 1865. The Escutcheon is very ornate and it reflects all of Morrison's achievements throughout his military career. There is also a photo of General Morrison at the bottom. All of the lettering was hand painted in place and several of the detailed lines are hand painted. There is also a significant amount of hand laid gold leafing on the escutcheon. CONDITION: The condition of this Escutcheon is excellent. There are only two stains that were noticed on each side of the paper. The paint and colors are still vibrant and the individual brush strokes highlight the piece. The gold leafing has some period folding but is in overall good condition. The escutcheon is in a wood and glass frame and measures 31 - 3/4" tall and 24 - 3/4" wide. The frame does have some scratches and dings, but it does not take away from the wonderfully preserved escutcheon. J.D.
