Lot consists of: (A) Japanese Civilian Steel Helmet, (B) German M42 Combat Helmet with reproduction leather liner and decal, (C) German Civilian Gas Mask in Original Cardboard Box. (A) The Japanese Civilian Steel Helmet is made of pressed steel and was painted in a subdued green. The exterior of the helmet has light scattered marks throughout and approximately 90% of the original paint. A hole can be observed on the front of the helmet for an insignia emblem, which does not appear to have ever had one. The interior of the helmet is also painted with the same subdued green paint and exhibits light patina throughout. The liner system is a simple, coarsely woven netting with a double twist fiber rope as a strap or carrier. Two areas of the liner system have become detached from the helmet shell. The number “2734” is stamped into the shell, as well as being painted in red paint on the interior skirt of the helmet, along with some unknown Kanji. CONDITION: Overall Excellent. (B) The Shell of the German M42 Combat Helmet retains approximately 95% of its original dark feldgrau finish and shows scattered light marks throughout. The decal on the helmet is a reproduction. The three liner retention pins are tight and appear to be the correct color of the helmet. The interior of the helmet is painted in the same color as the exterior and shows some flaking of the paint from surface rust. The leather liner of the helmet is a reproduction replacement. The liner band is an original from World War II, but is most likely not the original liner band for this helmet. It would be safe to say that this liner system is, most likely, completely replaced. Overall, the helmet is still a nice representative example of a German M42 Helmet. CONDITION: Excellent. (C) The German Civilian Gas Mask’s Cardboard Box is marked “VM” for Volksgasmaske, shows signs of storage wear, and has a small tear in it. Inside the box is the rubber gas mask, the metal cartridge, and the original VM40 instruction manual. CONDITION: Box is in very good condition. Gas mask is in near mint condition. Overall, the set is in very good to excellent condition. D.W.
