Sheble and Fisher enlisted sabers are considered scarce. See Thillmann's "Cavalry and Artillery Sabers," for a full discussion. This is their 1840 style with brass hilt, wire bound leather grip and 1840 style blade bearing a partially visible "Sheble and Fisher / Philada." maker stamp on the reverse ricasso. Scabbard has a screw fastened throat indicative of a European import scabbard and Thillmann illustrates a different style with a "Philadelphia" drag, but Sheble and Fishers often show up in scabbards of this type and it may be correct. The sword is not inspected and US contracts have not been found, but Thillmann feels they may still come to light. CONDITION: Sword is very good with full wrap and wire on hilt with medium patina to brass and minor age stains. Leather washer in place under the guard. Blade is very good. In the bright and showing original cross polishing at the base. Blade stamp is light in the center. The first inch of the blade, including the ricasso has a mixed brown and grey stain on either side. The point is good. The edge has just two miniscule nicks that are visible only on the closest inspection. Scabbard is good with thin brown lacquer. One small dent on obverse eight inches from tip. Throat shows silver grey with small "S" on upper edge and may be replaced. The screw was replaced with rivet or flattened. Some signs of solder. (B) Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber with near mint condition blade. Brass hilt with undisturbed age patina, "ADK" inspector mark on guard, full wire and leather wrap, leather washer in place. Crisp "US / J.C.W. / 1865" blade stamp on obverse ricasso. Ames company scroll stamp on reverse. CONDITION: Blade is bright with mirror finish and cross polishing visible. Two very small spots of freckling 5" from guard on obverse. Three miniscule nicks to edge more evident to the touch than the eye. A pair of very good, regulation pattern Civil War US enlisted sabers.
