Prussian Model 1897 Pickelhaube to an officer of 3rd Battalion of Infantry Regiment 96 (7th Thuringian). IR96 was formed in 1867 in the former state of Reuss within Thuringia, Germany. Officer Pickelhauben from this unit are rarely encountered. Helmet body is made from a polished leather and has a moderate level of crazing, with a 3" area of minor denting behind the left wing of the front plate. The visors have a moderate level of crazing, with the usual heat damage. Officer chin scale, spike base, pearl ring, starts and spike are present. One of the four stars does not match the other three and is likely to have been replaced. Both the Imperial German national and Reuss officer rosettes are present, but it appears the Reuss rosette is not the correct one for the third battalion, as it should be in the colors of gold, red, and black. This example is in the colors of gold, red, and blue. Front plate is the standard Prussian type with the Reuss center piece for the third battalion is attached. Light green officer quality silk liner is present with light to moderate age staining, and is detached from the sweat band approximately 40% of its circumference. Leather sweat band with maker marks is present and has moderate staining from being worn, with light to moderate wear on the folded edges. Pencil markings are present inside the helmet, and it appears the four star washers have been replaced at some point. The washers retaining the front plate do not match. The green covering inside the front visor is buckling in several areas. CONDITION: Overall very good. WZ
