Regulation US army pattern 1840 sword for surgeons and assistant surgeons. Standard pattern with gilt brass hilt with deeply cast floral elements, pineapple/urn finial, round cartouche with American eagle on either side of the grip, scrolling foliate crossguard, blank stippled langet reverse; obverse with raised Old English silvered "MS" over six stars. Blade etched with floral motifs, American eagle with motto scroll on one side, "M.S." on the other in panel with floral and pointed ends. CONDITION: Very good. Hilt shows age brass patina but with much gilt remaining in lower sections of the casting. Gilt and silver strong on the obverse langet. Blade bright with good edge and point. Some graying. Frosting is gray, emphasizing the etched motifs. Gilt brass scabbard with aged patina, but gilt showing in recesses of floral mounts. Mounts are cast with floral motifs on both sides. Upper two rings and middle single ring are present. A scarce US regulation sword carried not only by medical staff at general hospitals but in the field as well by medical staff at the regimental level. (SR)
