A Civil War cavalry officer's saber with typical unstopped, narrow blade and downturned pommel with spanner nut characteristic of Sauerbier of New Jersey. Typical Sauerbier heavy brass hilt with floral decoration. Leather grip with triple brass wire binding. Etched floral motifs and US shield obverse. Reverse with floral, arms, and "U.S." Browned scabbard with openwork floral mounts. CONDITION: Very good. Good grip and wire, mellow patina to hilt with some subdued gilt. Pad in place. Blade is grey with dark grey spots, obscuring the etched motifs. A few minor edge nicks. Hilt has slight looseness, but might tighten. A good example of a regulation US cavalry officer's saber with characteristic Sauerbier touches. SR
