Regulation 1872 pattern sword for general officers. Springfield Armory marked with applied gilt star between the mounts indicating a brigadier general. Standard configuration with deeply cast gilt brass hilt with counterguards bearing eagle with arrows and branches with flanking flags on obverse and US shield superimposed on display of arms on reverse. Silver wire grip. Blade etched with gold wash highlighting. Obverse etched with three extended foliate panels, three martial (one includes US shield) and American eagle with spread wings and motto ribbon. Reverse with Springfield Armory panel at bottom, US with starburst border, three foliate panels, three martial including one with US shield. Scabbard plated steel with plain drag, floral ring mounts, deeply cast and chased star. CONDITION: Very good. Hilt is excellent with great detail and much gilt. Wire is subdued. Blade has good edge and point. Etching is very visible but metal shows some gray spots and gold was has thinned with slight yellow tone. Scabbard shows some overall freckling, but also some brown spots, one sizable on reverse and part of obverse low down, small spots between the mounts. A scarce high-ranking regulation sword made at the national armory. (SR)
