Scarce Blakeslee patent “cavalry style” cartridge box for Spencer rifles and carbines. Ten-tube version designed to be worn across the soldier’s front holding 70 rounds of ammunition in tin tubes, ready to be dropped into the butt-stock magazine. Manufactured concurrently with the six-tube boxes these were termed the “cavalry style” in company and government documents. 32,000 were supplied by Gaylord and by Wilkinson prior to June 1866, but Marcot notes that the ten-tube version is, “a very desirable accoutrement for collectors… few have survived.” CONDITION: Good to very good. Box shows use. All ten tubes in place. Leather shows surface wear, crackling and some shrinkage. Maker mark not legible, but certainly Gaylord or Wilkinson. Waist belt loop and brass loops for shoulder sling in place. Leather lid present. Latch tab broken and fastening stud missing. Upper portion of inner block raised above top edge of leather body. Box opens a bit stiffly. Carved initials on leather top indicate actual issue. A scarce cavalry cartridge box for the formidable Spencer 7-shot repeating carbine and rifle. SR
