Made with 32 plates of forged iron construction, covered in black lacquer with raised ridge lines gilded. Tehen with floral designs on punch dot background. Slot for maedate is vacant. Mabizashi with raised relief geometrics. Fukigaeshi with family crest on stippled gilt ground. Shikoro of four lames make of gilded iron and bound with cord. Blue liner appears to be of same period of helmet. Red affixing cord also appears to be of period. No signature observed. Black lacquered menpo with copper teeth. Horsehair moustache and goatee. Red lacquer lips and interior. Neck guard of gilded iron and bound with blue cord. CONDITION: Good, with some chipping to lacquer and gilding throughout and some areas of gilding that have cracked but not lifted yet. Exercise caution. Lacquer has a couple of areas that have chipped, and cracks in mabizashi. Liner has one minor tear in it. Menpo is very good, with some minor chipping to lacquer. Goatee is missing much of the horse hair. Some chipping and cracking to gilding on neckguard. This is a great example of the Japanese helmet as it later evolved, with smaller fukigaeshi and a raised rear bowl to better fit the head. EW
