Full tang bowie knife with original mother of pearl handle scales bearing an ornate nickel silver escutcheon on the obverse, nickel silver guard of elaborate design. Saber ground blade of classic clip point style, marked on ricasso E.M. DICKINSON SHEFFIELD. Southwest style leather sheath an old replacement. Circa 1882-1891. Dickinson founded his Sheffield factory, Murray Works, in about 1882 and this knife was almost certainly produced before country-of-origin markings became required starting in 1891. This style of knife sometimes referred to as a “bowie hunter” was popular in the Old West and not often seen dressed in fancy mother of pearl. CONDITION: In generally excellent condition. The blade shows signs of sharpening and use. The handle is free from cracks and only a few tiny chips to show its age. Sheath a replacement.
