First type Merrill Breechloading Carbine, manufactured by Merrill in Baltimore, MD during the American Civil War era. 22 - 1/8" round barrel in .54 caliber with folding 2 leaf carbine rear sight graduated to 500 yards and blade front sight. 1 piece plain walnut stock with single brass barrel band, bar with saddle ring, brass patchbox and brass military buttplate. Lock serial number matches lever serial number (11078) with inside of lever, loading arm and inside of patchbox numbered "756". Merrill carbines were known to be issued to Union cavalry regiments such as the 1st, 5th, and 18th New York, the 11th, 17th, and 18th Pennsylvania, the 1st New Jersey, the 7th Indiana, the 1st and 3rd Wisconsin, the 27th Kentucky, and the 1st Delaware. CONDITION: Good, with barrel turned a speckled brown-gray patina with consistent age related light pitting throughout. Stock is good as sanded and refinished with heavy handling marks throughout. Mechanically good, with plunger face heavily marred and needing to be replaced. Bore is frosted with abrasion throughout from period use with corrosive black powder and well-defined 3 groove rifling.
