Shortly after the Netherlands ordered their first batch of Johnson rifles in 1941, Chile placed an order for 1000 guns in 7x57mm for mounted troops. Instead of tooling up to make 7mm Mauser barrels, Johnson Automatics acquired them from the National Arsenal of Mexico. Other parts were standard for .30-06 production, the receiver and barrel bushing even marked ".30-06". Receiver stamped on top with maker, model, patent information, and with "CRANSTON / ARMS" logo. Protected blade front sight and adjustable aperture rear. Standard 2-piece walnut stocks with a checkered steel butt plate. Underside of barrel is import marked by Navy Arms, as imported by Val Forgett in the 1970s or 80s. Complete with a bayonet with scabbard, as well as a Dutch pattern sling and muzzle cover. CONDITION: Fine. Nearly all of the original matte gray finish is retained throughout with some mild high edge wear and handling marks. Stocks have some scattered impressions. Bright, well defined bore. Fine mechanics. An outstanding example of a scarce rifle that would be very difficult to improve upon.
