Reciever dates to 1939. Never a catalogued caliber, research shows a single known carbine but no rifles. According to "The Rifleman's Rifle", page 245, Winchester tracked the pre war type 1 rifle frame serial numbers and recorded 13,283 as non-standard items and another 2090 Type 2s from 1946-1948. Given that Winchester would make virtually anything on special order, we will never know how many calibers were made for the Model 70. Also, the Golden Age for cartridge wildcatters existed from 1920 through the 1950s so the interest in cartridges and their rifles was in its heyday. With stock removed, the base of barrel is stamped "38" for year, no proof or caliber stamp. The left side of barrel has the Winchester legend with single die "7.92MM". Pre-War safety and receiver stripper clip cut. Standard blue finish, hooded ramp front sight, filled rear slot, and added Lyman receiver sight. The walnut stock features a checkered pistol grip, straight comb, checkered metal buttplate, and swivels. The bolt has matching etched serial number. CONDITION: Excellent. Overall metal is at least 98% with a few handling marks. Wood is excellent with a few minor impressions. Mechanically sound. Bore is bright.
