This is an original Colt Vickers receiver box which has been rebuilt into a British Vickers machine gun using both “VSM” (Vickers, Sons, Maxim) and “MA” (Australian) manufactured parts. Water fill and drain caps present with original brass chain and cork at the front of the gun. It is no surprise that there is a variety of proofmarks on different parts of this gun, but the critical point is that this was one of Dolf Goldsmith’s Vickers guns, and one can be pretty confident it will run well. Sideplate has the gun serial number about 3" to the rear of the feedblock. The water jacket is British made, as is the “VSM” marked fusee cover. The lock is Australian. Top cover is broad arrow marked with sights for .303 ammunition, and crosshead is “VA” marked. An extremely fine late production Vickers tripod is included with gun, as well as steam hose, three brass-tabbed cloth belts, a tin water can, and wooden ammo box with tin insert. Electronic NFA registry indicates “COLT” as the manufacturer of this gun. PROVENANCE: From the Estate collection of Dolf L. Goldsmith. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent as refinished upon remanufacture with some dings and small areas of pitting visible under the refinish in places. The bulbous muzzle attachment retains original drab green painted finish with some loss revealing a gray and brown patina. Wood handles of backplate are extremely fine with handling marks. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Lock face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a full-auto only machine gun. Tripod, tripod head, water can and wood ammo box have a deep moss green repaint (Dolf loved to paint). The Vickers gun is one of the most versatile machine gun firing platforms and one of the greatest belt-fed machine guns in history. Nothing has ever topped their endurance record.
