Weatherby made their first bolt action rifle using the original FN Mauser action in 1949. This rifle probably dates from 1951 given production of rifles in the early years were small, with approximately 399 made by the end of 1950. This early rifle features the Southgate frame address, blue finish, no barrel sights and wearing a modern German Schmidt & Bender Zenith scope. The walnut stock features a Monte Carlo comb, roll over cheek piece, a Weatherby black waffle recoil pad, a contrasting rosewood grip cap with diamond design and the rosewood forearm tip. The floor plate and trigger guard are gold plated exhibiting very deep relief Germanic style engraving of a large horned Elk with scroll borders. Sling eyes are also gold plated. There is a gold gilt diamond plaque at forearm base with initials TWA. The forearm triple diamond stock inlays are listed at a pattern 23 in the 1953 catalog. The checkering pattern is listed as #9 in the same catalog. The exact gold plated engraved floor plate and trigger guard are found on page 79 in the 1956-57 catalog. The list price for this piece is $150.00 with the retail cost of this rifle at about $450 without extras. CONDITION: Excellent. Rifle retains nearly all its original finish save for a few minor handling marks and small finish loss on stock. Mechanically sound. Bore is well defined but frosted.
