19th century. Highly embellished. Medial ridge running the length of the blade with an indecipherable etched design one-third of the way down both sides of the blade. Two silver inlaid touch marks are visible on the tang inside the cup. Blade is old, showing nice lamination marks. The cup and hilt are 19th century additions. The cup has a spurious touch mark, just above the upward curling of the cross guard. The guard is beautifully and highly embossed, depicting a pitched battle, incorporating horsemen and foot soldiers below a castle. Above and below are beautifully pierced and embossed borders, encompassing human faces and tendrils ending in animal heads. The flattened steel pommel is relief chiseled on each side with panels depicting mounted knights and chiseled, scroll floral relief designs cover the rest of the pommel. Beautiful silver Guard DePolvo, depicting the continued pitched battle in extremely fine detail. The grip is steel wire-wrapped with a wide silver spiral wrapping enhancement, both Turks knots are made of woven silver. Blade is lightly to heavily pitted in areas and there are also areas of fresh red rust. Embossing on the guard and the high relief chiseling on the pommel, both have wear to high spots. Light to moderate pitting in areas; however, it does not take away from the beauty of the piece.
