Circa 1550. Italian. Long tapering double edged blade with wide central fuller on each side of blade. The wide fullers are flanked on each side by a deeper narrow fuller and are enhanced with incised lines and five stamped decorative crosses on each side. Beak-shaped side lugs are stamped on each side with a four leaf decorative flower, the leaves being diamond shaped. The blade is signed by the blade maker, down one side of the central fuller, "Andrea Feraro", whom was very revered in his time. At the point of termination of the fullers, a touch mark is on either side of the blade. The fullers descend 15 inches down the blade, with a flattened center section. The iron hilt is comprised of long straight quillons with spiral chiseled decoration which covers the last few inches of each tip. Large oval side ring on one side, enhanced with chiseled decorative balls in the center. Leather grip features spiral carving and is peeling with some worm holes, 70% of the original leather is still present. Mushroom shaped pommel appears to be a period piece; however, it does not fit properly when the base attaches to the top of the grip, and is unembellished. All the other iron pieces are embellished, which leads to the conclusion that the pommel is a replacement. All steel parts are lightly pitted in areas with some moderate to heavy pitting.
