Attractive rod tension snare drum with painted presentation around the vent hole, "Presented to the / 201st Infantry / N.Y. Vol. / By the Society of Colonial Wars / in the State of New York, 1898," with short flourishes at left and right of top line. The lettering is white with black shading and vent hole has a black insert and a large, painted 8-pointed shaded star around it. Body is brownish red. Rims are black with geometric bands. The regiment organized under McKinley's May 25, 1898 call for troops, recruited mostly in New York City and Brooklyn, mustered in during July and served as part of the 2nd Corps in New York, Camp Meade in Pennsylvania, and Greenville, South Carolina, before mustering out April 1899. The presentation most likely predates the regiment's departure for Camp Meade in September 1898. Snare tightener shows initials JHB. No maker label. CONDITION: Excellent. Very nice condition paint, just a few small abrasions or scratches well away from the presentation. Rims show wear to geometric bands. Tear bottom head. Patch to top head. Iniitials "RJD, Jr." in pencil on top head. Rims, heads, flesh hoops, carrying ring, metallic snare, rods and tighteners all in place.
