John Baynton, son of John Baynton (1726–1773) of the trading company of Baynton, Wharton and Morgan, was commissioned Deputy Paymaster General for the Western Department on July 11, 1777, and served as such until 3 June 3, 1779. Lot consists of three items: (A) “The United States of America for cash pd the regular troops militia and others in Continental Service on the Western Frontiers of Virginia & Pennsylvania- To John Baynton.” 2 folio ledger pages (8p. total,) some 99 entries for payments from Nov. 1777- August 1778. Includes some familiar names such as Simon Girty and Edward Hand, also the crew of the armed boat Rattle Snake, and others. Includes an accounting of funds received from Congress, the “Continental Treasurer at York Town,” etc. (B) 1778 accounts from the Clothier’s Department, 1p. (C) Payments for the making of shirts and drawers for the 13th Virginia, shirts and breeches for others, etc., 1778-1779. Largest 8 - 1/2 X 13 in. CONDITION: Excellent.
