For a similar example, see plate 336.S on page 173 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. This sword has a Spanish-style imported three fuller slightly curved blade. The brass hilt has a four-slot guard and a fluted knuckle bow. The dog's head pommel has a turned brass capstan on top. The grip is bone and has fluted sections with a brass ferrule at the base. Complete with an 18th century associated black leather scabbard with iron mount at the top. The scabbard also has its original leather frog and homespun strap. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina with scattered spots of light pitting and darker patina. Hilt retains a mustard patina, showing some scattered marks from use and some minor bending to guard branches and knuckle bow. Grip excellent showing a honey patina with some hairline age cracks. Scabbard shows losses to surface and crazing with a small portion missing at the tip. Frog shows some losses and strap has been reattached. A nice and scarce form of an American Revolutionary War period cavalry saber. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
