REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENVELOPES TO JOHN HANSON AND JOSIAH HARMAR.

Lot consists of six items: (A) Envelope addressed to “John Hanson Esquire / President of Congress. / Philadelphia.” Lower left: “By the Brig / General Greene / Capt. Bacon.” Hanson 1721-1783 was in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1777, Maryland delegate to the Continental Congress June 1780, signer of the Articles of Confederation March 1781, and 3rd President of the Confederation Congress Nov. 1781 - Nov. 1782. 3-1/2 x 8 in. Two partial red wax seals on reverse showing three birds on a shield and motto, “WHATEVER IS IS BEST.” CONDITION: VG. One seal missing. Tears to paper above the other two. (B) Five envelopes addressed to Josiah Harmar. Three as Brigadier General at Fort Washington, one as simply Brigadier General and one as “Lieut. Col. Commandant Josiah Harmar / Ohio,” referring to his command of the 1st American Regiment. Well known for his role int the 1790s campaigns in the Norhwest and his defeat at the Battle of the Maumee. Two from the War Office; one from the War-department. Largest 3-1/2 x 8-1/2 in. CONDITION: Excellent, but losses to red wax seals.
