REVOLUTIONARY WAR FORT PITT AND WESTERN PA DOCUMENT GROUP.

Lot consists of 13 items related to Fort Pitt and western PA. (A) 1767 payment by Edward Blain to Baynton, Wharton and Morgan, who ran an early trading post at Ft. Pitts. Remainder are Revolutionary War pay orders, many directed to John Baynton, son of the Baynton in the trading firm, who was Deputy Paymaster General at the fort 1777-1778. (B-E) Four small ledger pages, 2p., of pay orders by Edward Hand, commander of the post, to the younger John Baynton for sums to be paid to officers to pay their companies. Two such orders per side. Includes pay is for militia companies, a company of regulars, crew of an armed boat, etc. (F) “Acct of goods delivered to Ensign Archibald Read Paymr & other officers belonging to the 8th Penna Regt..” Includes raw materials but also “ruffled shirts…” (G) Request to issue three yards scarlet serge and three yards white serge. (H-I) Two receipts for issues of cloth. (J) 1776 Pass for 8 Pennsylvania militiamen to cross Bousman’s Ferry on the Monongahela. Signed by John Carnahan, later killed in defense of a blockhouse. (K) 1782 certificate that a militiaman called up for 30 days has supplied a substitute. (L) Sept. 1776 note of debt for passage and repassage of seven men across the Monongahela at Bousman’s Ferry (M) Similar note same day for passage of nine men “of Redman’s Compy.” Signed by a sergeant. CONDITION: All Very Good. Largest 8 x 12 in.
