Letter by Henry Glen (1739-1814) to Philip Van Rensselaer datelined Schenectady 26th March 1777 regarding a contract for equipping supply boats. An early settler, Glen became a successful merchant giving him experience in business and the transportation of goods in particular. Letter regards a contract for tools, i.e. oars, sitting poles, etc., for 150 boats at Albany, Saratoga and Schenectady. Glen was reportedly also a captain in the Schenectady militia, member of the Committee of Safety, and of the Provincial Congress, with later service also in the army’s Quartermaster Department. Van Rennselaer, also a merchant with considerable political connections and organizational talent, is referred to variously as store keeper, military store keeper and commissary for the Northern Department.
