For another identical example by this maker, see 243.S on page 142 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. This sword is the official pattern backsword issued to the enlisted men of the Highland Regiments between 1750 and 1783. These swords are seldom found today and rarely do their unit markings remain. The writer knows of only six with the 42nd designation that have a period inscription. This example was likely marked but the markings have likely been intentionally removed. The blades were manufactured by two makers, Drury of London and "Iefries" (Jeffries). Each side of the steel blade has a deep single fuller on top and is deeply struck with "(crown) / GR / JEF / RIES". The basket hilt has a series of triangle and circle piercings specific to this pattern and to Jeffries. The pommel is cone shaped. The present wooden grip is the original. Grip is devoid of leather wrap. CONDITION: Blade retains a spotted grey patina and shows scattered areas of light putting and "battle nicks" to cutting edge. Hilt retains a dark heavy brown patina throughout. Blade slightly loose to hilt and wood grip slightly loose and shows scattered marks from use. A scarce Highland pattern by the earlier of the two makers.
