A classic example of the Scottish cutlery set, with a large dirk with a single edge; spine is partially flat for approximately 10" and decorated with cross hatching, crosses, and a thistle before narrowing for last 5". Partial fuller follows flat back area. Left side of dirk is engraved "T.F.", the mark of the blademaker. Handle has a carved grip in traditional knotwork, with a flared upper area, while base is scalloped towards pommel. Pommel and ricasso with brass covering. Flat base pommel with screw. Utensils comprise a small 2-tined fork and a small single edged knife with a partially flattened back decorated with crosshatching similar to the dirk. Smooth wooden handles and brass caps on utensils. Housed in a simple leather scabbard with brass tip and reinforcements at mouths for each piece. Some variation in patina from cleaning. CONDITION: Overall good. Metal shows evidence of being cleaned in the European fashion with some spotted darkness and polishing marks. Wood has some handling marks and lightening to high edges. Brass has a deep uncleaned golden hue. Leather is good with a mottled appearance, complete, but heavily crazed and with a few openings, mostly extensions of mouths and carrying hole. A well presenting set.
