TIMOTHY PICKERING AS SECRETARY OF STATE 1798 AND 1800.

Lot consists of two items relating to Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) as Secretary of State. A) Autograph letter signed, marked “private,” dated Jan. 2, 1800 at Philadelphia, 2pp, 8 X10 in. bifold. Addressed to David Lenox, US agent posted to Britain “for the relief and protection of American Seamen.” Lenox apparently thought Pickering was involved in some effort to decrease his salary or impede his compensation for necessary expenses and Pickering writes to disabuse him of the idea. CONDITION: Very good, one short tear on fold and hole from paper adhering to seal on blank back page. B) DS as Secretary of State with white impressed seal, April 10, 1798, 2p. 8 x 10 in. Affidavit by Pickering certifying the accuracy of a copy of a deposition on file with his office.
