Dating 1790-1815 this cheese-box style canteen uses 3 wire brackets for the shoulder sling rather than the more commonly found tacked leather strips. 6 primitive iron tacks in 1 row secure the overlap of the rim. Each face is secured to the rim by an iron tack and small pegs. 1 iron tack in rim below the bracket opposite the overlap may have held a cord for a stopper. Below the overlap the rim has cracked 1/2" from the edge, running from the overlap down to the lower bracket. The surfaces show wear, but substantial thin remnants of old bluish-green paint mixing with some reddish-brown tones. This pattern was easy to make by local woodworkers and remained popular from the Revolution into the 1840s in militia hands, often with painted decoration to match knapsacks, etc. CONDITION: Very Good. The rim crack has allowed the section next to it to shrink down slightly, but the wood is stable. This has a purported provenance from Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. SR
