Lot #2016:
WAGONMASTER HOAKESLY AND COMMISSARY COLLYER GAIN PAROLE FROM SARATOGA
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/13/2026
June 16, 1780, parole signed by Robert Hoakesley and Nathaniel Collyer “Officers under the Convention of Saratoga, having been regularly Exchanged and Obtained permission to proceed to Elizabeth Town in the state of New. Jersey…” promising not to give or receive information about American forces, positions, etc. and await “proper passports from the Commissary of Prisoners.” They also promise not to carry their servants to New York until they are exchanged or obtain permission for it. Hoakesley was an Albany merchant who “went over” to the British, had a ship confiscated as a result, was a wagonmaster under Burgoyne and later protested inadequate provisions for the captured British. Collyer was a Commissary, though his subscription as “A.D.C.” may indicate he held a position on a general’s personal staff. Both men are mentioned in the Washington papers. 1 p. 8-1/2 x 12 in. CONDITION: Very Good.
