As is signed on the locks, John Manton & Son worked at No. 6 Dover St, London circa 1824 to 1844. Gun (A) is an original Manton with lightly engraved octagon barrel, arabesque scroll engraved percussion box lock, folding trigger, finely checkered walnut bag handle, silver grotesque head cap, and silver grip escutcheon. Gun (B) appears has been built much later to match, making a pair. Guns are housed in an original period partitioned mahogany case with Manton paper trade label and are accompanied by a rod, Moroccan leather wrapped flask, mold, and nipple/barrel wrench. Case lid escutcheon engraved with the crest of George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough (1766-1840). Educated at Eaton, George Spencer served in the House of Parliament beginning in 1790, with a stint as Lord of the Treasury from 1804 to 1806, and then was called to the House of Lords, becoming Duke of Malborough in 1817. An extravagant collector of antiques despite massive debts, his collections were eventually seized and sold. CONDITION: Very good, finishes having faded to a a gray patina. Gun (B) matches well for a nice display.
