Noted export John Kopec states that this revolver was in a shipment in 1874 in lot 7 with the majority of these guns being sent to the Fifth Cavalry in Arizona but does fall within two known Custer or Benteen guns. O.W. Ainsworth stamp can be found on the barrel, cylinder, backstrap and trigger guard. According to Kopec, the grips are period replacements with wrong number and newer cartouche and A on grips. The trigger, bolt screws and ejector tube dowel are replacements. All numbers are matching. CONDITION: Traces of original blue finish on ejector, cylinder and straps while balance of gun is a lovely soft patina with sharp legends including the barrel address, two line patent stamp, and standard US on frame. The action is as smooth as butter and the bore is sharp with light black powder abrasion that may clean better. An extremely handsome Custer era Ainsworth Colt. DB
