Two Lecomtes are recorder in Stockel; one in Paris circa 1878, and a much more likely, Jean Jacques Lecomte, who worked circa 1775-1790, and was recorded as a knifemaker at the Rue de la Coutellerie. Octagonal to round barrel with partially flattened rib with brass half moon front sight, with light floral engraving over the breech. Discrete British proofs on left side, above sideplate. Convex banana lockplates engraved "Lecomte" with a floral sprig at rear. Bridled waterproof pan, friction frizzen, and gooseneck cock. Trumpet headed iron ramrods retained by a turned balustrade ferrule with reinforced mouth en suite. Carved stocks with floral finial at mouth and arrowpoint finial at trigger guard. Brass sideplates with geometric and floral elements retained by pair sidenails. Brass trigger guards with border work and pointed finial. Birdshead buttcaps with flattened pommels decorated with florals. CONDITION: Barrels rebrowned over some fine oxidation, with engraving heavily softened. Touchholes rebushed, reconverted from percussion. Locks cleaned to gunmetal grey in the European fashion. Stocks with numerous handling marks, with cracks at sideplates. Locks with corrosion through pan and, on (A), at rear of lock. Mechanically fine, bores with smooth oxidation and evidence of reconversion.
