A lovely pair of flintlock pistols of classic Germanic form. Barrels with brass half moon front sights on partially flattened sighting plane with a mix of relief and incise carving over the breech in the form of florals and scrollwork. Ramrod with a gilt brass trumpet head retained by a single turned ferrule and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Flat locks with beveled edges decorated with modern cut sprays of florals and vignettes of a bird at rear, fit with gooseneck cocks, unbridled pans, and friction frizzens. Stocks with horn forearm caps and relief carving of florals and geometrics, particularly well detailed about the tang and ramrod mouth. Gilt brass furniture composes an elaborately pierced sideplate that depicts a stand of arms, an eagle, and a lion, trigger guard with a crescent moon design and shell finial, heraldic shield at wrist atop a stand of arms and surmounted by the side profile of a bearded man with florals, and an elaborate buttcap with a grotesque and scrollwork about the perimeter. CONDITION: Metal polished and cleaned in the European fashion, softening engraving, particularly to barrel, with some scattered darkness. Stocks are very good with some handling marks and impressions throughout, and a well executed repair at rear of the mortise of gun (B). Furniture with much gilding left, approximately half, with better retention in recesses and protected areas. Mechanically fine, pistol (B) with an obstruction in barrel that appears to be cloth (?), bores otherwise very good.
