.58 percussion, barrel length 40". Referred to as the Type I, manufactured by Springfield Armory, it is a standard military issue Civil War rifle. Top of barrel is dated 1863. Left side of barrel has the "VP" proof. Strong cartouche on left side is ESA in oval. Lock is dated 1863 with "US Springfield". It has the standard folding leaf rear battle sight. Three barrel bands are stamped "U". The butt plate is stamped "US". Walnut stocks are very good with usual minor dings. Metal is finished in the white and exhibits age freckling. Lock and hammer have turned a light grey. Unit number "B9" stamped on tang. Strong, clean bore with light powder abrasion. Often referred to as the Gettysburg Model due to its production during the Gettysburg campaign. Overall, a very clean, far above average example.
