Henry Hyman is recorded in "Confederate and Southern Agent Marked Shotguns" by Pritchard, Ashwroth, Bryson, Prince, and Smith as an importer of guns, jewelry and other goods from 1831 till his death in 1856, after which his wife continued the buisness till 1865. Hyman is listed on pages 244 and 245, with the demonstrative piece being another Webley muzzleloader. Hyman's import mark on the slightly raised concave game rib is shown in the book in the same style. Hooked patent breeches with blowouts. Ramrod, possibly the original, is retained by two reinforced iron ferrules with finial engraved with acanthus. Barrels retained by a single key. Front action locks decorated with acanthus scroll and geometric borders, right side depicting a pair of rabbits and pheasant in a field, left side with dog and more pheasant; both locks signed "James Webley, London". Stock has been reinforced with small plates of German silver under breeches. Tang and cocks engraved en suite with locks. Trigger guard with long tang engraved with a dog mid-chase after phreasant. Wrist checkered in point pattern. Vacant silver shield at toe. Buttplate engraved at heel. CONDITION: Good as restored. Barrels retain much of an old brown with some oxidation visible under the finish. Locks, cocks, and small parts have been polished to an in the white appearance, with some softening to engraving as a result. Wood has been gently sanded and revarnished with some softeness to edges as a result; some minor handling marks throughout, with chipps missing at both locks, along forearm, and one rather large section missing at toe. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bores are very good with some roughness towards muzzles. EW
