This is a very scarce Soviet Russian PPD-40 machine gun, which was the predecessor to the very prolifically produced and fielded PPSh-41 machine gun. 1 original PPD-40 71-round drum, distinctive with only 1 feed lip, and 1 PPSh-41 modified to work in this gun are included with this lot. Front sight hood not present on his gun. Wood on this gun is contemporary, but original wood stock is included as well. This gun was manufactured in 1940 and so marked on the receiver forward of the serial number. The serial number on the receiver is the only immediately visible number. The trigger group under the stock bears another number. One can readily see the influence of other earlier machine gun designs on this model. The bolt resembles the MP-28 and Lanchester with a moveable firing pin. The perforations at the muzzle surrounding the barrel are also reminiscent of the MP-28 and Lanchester. The PPD-40 was a modification of the earlier PPD - 1934/38 and was produced at the Sestrorjetski and Tula arsenals in 1940-41. Electronic NFA registry indicates “INTERNATIONAL ARMORED GROUP” as the manufacturer. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent as refinished with some barely discernible handling marks and slight pitting. Wood stock extremely fine to near excellent with some light handling marks. Original stock exhibits a loss on the left side, with a repaired crack running along the length of the receiver also on the left side. Original stock's buttplate and metal fixtures are absent. Drums are extremely fine and consignor states the gun runs well. Bore is near excellent, shiny, and bright. Bolt shows light pitting on the face, but this is only cosmetic and is otherwise extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a select-fire machine gun with a “paddle-type” selector which shows “1” in the forward position for semi-automatic fire, and “71” in the rear position for fully automatic fire. This cataloger has always found it amusing that the designer seemed to assume that the firer would “dump” the magazine on the full-auto selection. This is a fine collectible machine gun very seldom encountered and also a great recreational machine gun for the machine gun enthusiast. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 or 4. JWK 2022-3-45

CORRECTION: Great news! This gun is CURIO & RELIC eligible. The BATF has verified the registration of this gun dates back to 1968. This is an original Russian PPD-40.
