Tack decorated, cowhide covered coach or traveler's trunk. Flat bottom, cylindrical body, with leather flaps and strap loops anchored at the ends by triangles of ten brass tacks. Brass tack initials "S+C" at top center in tacked oval, the tacks anchoring remains of flat leather decorative border. Iron handles in place on the side. Iron lock with hasp and key in place, not functional. Interior lined in floral wallpaper. CONDITION: Good. Hair of hide largely worn from top, back and left side; present on front and right. Brass tacks and leather loops missing from reverse, but present on top and front. Hide shows separation line on hinge, tear on lower reverse with 1 piece coming loose. 4 tacks present on lower reverse from those used to secure ends of leather loops under which straps would pass. A rare survivor of travelers' luggage from the early nineteenth century.
