This remarkable wood sculpture is one of the finest compositional examples you will find of this art form; the cigar store Indian trade sign. It is life size, and the subtle color palette the artist used looks even better with the patina of time on it. He is wearing a full headdress and what is probably a mountain lion mantle on his shoulders. Most cigar store sculptures are very static, whereas this Chief is relatively dynamically posed, canted forward with one leg raised on a block, while shielding his eyes from the Sun. In addition, the realism of the stoic face is a very real testament to the sculptor's technical skill. His left hand is holding a stack of tempting tobacco products. A real find for the distinguished collector. Attributed to Samuel Robb with support from restorer Peter Deen.
