This rifle started off life in 1955. It was custom built by James C. Hartley who was the director of research at Winchester Arms Co. In a December 15th, 1974, Hartford Current article (accompanies rifle) it shows James Hartley with this exact rifle pictured on his personal gun rack. The rifle itself is a hybrid Model 1894/64. Features include a 20" round barrel (carbine length), chambered for the .30-30 Winchester cartridge, Model 64 style ramp front sight, and 2/3 magazine. Stocks are similar to a deluxe Model 64 with a more rakish specially designed pistol grip and a Winchester pistol grip cap. It has the checkered steel shotgun buttplate with the top teat. The rear sight blank has been filled and sports a Lyman 56 receiver sight. Mint bore and action. All metal surfaces retain approximately 95% original factory blue with a hint of thinning on the bottom of the forward frame. Wood is excellent with sharp checkering, no cracks or chips, and built in sling swivels. Beautiful near mint rifle that was custom designed/built by former a Winchester employee.
