Barrel length is 30’’ in .30 cal - 40 Krag. According to the Springfield Research letter, this rifle was issued on July 15, 1899 by serial number to the 26th U.S. Volunteer Infantry. The start of the 20th century found the United States Army pressed to meet military commitments in Cuba, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico. In 1901 Congress authorized five additional Regular Army Infantry regiments including the 26th. They started in the Philippines and spend 20 years of service deployed in the Southwest Pacific, the Mexican and Indian frontier and in Europe. The unit received its first battle streamer during the Philippine-American War. They later served in Expeditionary forces and World War I. Offered is a standard issue fine condition all original U.S. Krag Model 1898 rifle. This rifle has been upgraded with a Model 1901 model rear site first variation. The left side of stock has a bold “JSA” cartouche dated 1899 as well as a strong script proof “P” in circle under wrist. All metal is a smooth blue grey patina. Stock is excellent with few normal battle dings. Fine action. Strong rifle bore. Far above average.
