Tapered octagon barrel with sporting front sight and elevator adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight, two piece highly figured American walnut stocks with checkered forearms and straight checkered crescent buttstock, blue finish overall with case colored hammer and trigger bar, steel shotgun butt. Rifle is documented from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Letter states: Rifle, .38-72 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, fancy checkered stocks, Lyman front sight, shotgun butt, received in warehouse August 1900 and shipped same month. Very fine condition overall with most all blue finish remaining on barrel and receiver. Barrel has slight finish loss at muzzle and thinning blue with several very minor scratches on bottom and corners of octagon flats. Receiver retains over 95% of its blue finish with slight loss at rear top corner. Slight finish loss and thinning is evident on magazine assembly and at balance point. Stocks are very fine with no cracks or material loss. A small area of varnish loss is evident on the left and right side of the forearm around the border off the checkering. A bruise is evident on right side of stock but appears to be quite old. Bore is very good with sharp rifling. Mechanics are crisp and in proper functioning order. From the Ray Bentley Collection.
