This attractive incise-carved rifle was probably made in Virginia by Simon Lauck. It features a rifled octagonal barrel with sights on top flat. Flat lockplate with a few sprigs of engraving. Brass furniture includes a four-piece engraved patchbox with three piercings and a Virginia style finial, a pierced and engraved sideplate, and a full sideplate. Full length partially figured maple stock with moldings along ramrod channel. Molded cheekpiece on left side of butt and finely carved with incised scrolls with scalloping and feathering on both sides of cheekpiece, around barrel tang, and on left side of wrist. Good condition, overall. Barrel retains a dark heavy brown patina with some freckling. Lock has been professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration and retains a brown patina, some freckling. Brass polished bright, some light wear and minor marks. Stock has been heavily refinished, carving is excellent, some minor restoration around lock, crack from lock tang to barrel and a few minor age cracks on left side of forend. A very attractive longrifle that would look great above a fireplace!
